Actor on the scene in Database

Large organization many people are involved in the design, use and maintenance of a large database with hundred of users.Identify the people whose job involve the day to day use of  a large database call actor on the scene.

That people are

  • Database Administrator.
  • Database Designer.
  • End Users.
  • System Analyst and application programmers.
Workers behind the scene
Although these categories of workers behind the scene are instrumental in making the database system available to end users they typically do not use the database contents for their own purposes.
  • DBMS system designers and implementer.
  • Tool Developers.
  • Operators and maintenance personnel.
System Analyst and Application Programmers
System Analyst determine the requirements of end users. Application Programmers implement these specification as program then they test, debug, document and maintain these canned transactions. Such analysts and programmers commonly referred to as software developers.

Database Designer
Database designer are responsible for identifying the data to be stored in the database and for choosing appropriate structure to represent and store this data.It is the responsibility of database designer to communicate with users in order to understand the requirements and to create a design that meets these requirements. The final database design must be capable of supporting the requirements of all user group.

Database Administrator(DBA)
In a database the primary resource is database and secondary resource is a DBMS and related software. Administering these resources is the responsibility of database administrator(DBA). The Database Administrator is responsible for authorizing access to the database coordinating and monitoring its use and acquiring software and hardware resources as needed. The database administrator is accountable for problems such as security breaches and poor system response time.

End users
End users are the people whose jobs require access to the database for querying, updating and generating reports.

Categories of end users
  • Naive end users.
  • Casual end users.
  • Sophisticated end users.
  • Standalone users.
Naive end users or parametric end users
Their main job function revolves constantly querying and updating the database using standard types of querying and updating the database using standard types of queries and update called canned transactions that have been carefully programmed and tested.Clerks in any bank is a naive user because they don't have any DBMS knowledge but they still use the database and perform their given task.

Casual end users
Casual end users occasionally access the database but they may need different information each time. They use a sophisticated database query language to specify their request. High level managers or other occasional browsers.

Sophisticated end users
Database developers who write SQL queries. They don't use any application programs to request the database.Engineers, scientists and other who are familiarize themselves with the facilities of the DBMS in order to implement their own applications to meet their complex requirements.

Standalone users
Standalone users maintain personal database by using ready-made program package the provide easy to use menu-based or graphics-based interfaces. An example is the user of a tax package that stores a variety of personal financial data for tax purposes.
